Our ManifestoKris Ledel

Intelligence begins at the foundation.

Intelligence should shape a system from the ground up.

A cup begins to slip in your hand. You adjust your grip. The next time you pick it up, that experience is part of the movement.

What we experience affects what we notice. What we notice affects what we learn. What we learn changes how we act. And the consequences stay with us into the next decision.

That is the connected capacity we are building.

We want to build a mind.

We do not believe that bigger is enough. Making a system bigger must not become a way to avoid asking whether its foundations are right.

Our thesis is that intelligence must shape the architecture from the outset. Memory, learning and action need to develop together. Experience must be able to change the system that carries it.

A mistake should matter to the next attempt. A discovered connection should be testable in a new situation. It must be possible to abandon an explanation when reality contradicts it.

That requires us to return to questions that remain open.

What must a system retain to learn from consequences? How does it discover that its view of the world is wrong? What does it carry with it into an unfamiliar situation?

We want the answers to determine what we build.

That ambition comes with obligations.

We must be able to describe what would show that we are wrong.

That includes our conviction about the foundations. We must be willing to reconsider it, even after investing years in it. A result that contradicts our idea must be able to change both the idea and what we build.

We must be willing to learn in the way we want our systems to learn.

This is for anyone who has ever felt that something fundamental is missing. Who has wondered whether all we really need is more of the same. Who wants to explore another path and is prepared to hold it to equally high standards.

Follow the work. Challenge the assumptions. Test our claims. Help us discover what we do not yet understand.

That is why we are building a mind.
